about

While working as an office assistant for the Applied Research Center in Oakland in the spring of 2004 I was gifted with an iMac by LiP Magazine publisher Brian Awehali (LiP's production office was in our complex.)

though I had been recording for years and had at that time been executive prioducing and coordinating releases by my then band Deep Dickollective, I hadn't had the opportunity to do completed production work for our releases on my own.

Brian's gift (and that of whomever gifted him, Thanks You too!) enabled me to regularly get some of the sounds and ideas I had floating in my head as soundbeds for songs. I was further encouraged by the positive response I receieved from fellow artists and producers who heard my work, which led to a smattering of opportunities to contribute music to short and feature films as well as to the albums of other artists in the then burgeoning "homohop" community.

I haven't related to this particular collection as a coherent "album" as such hence the title, but more as a marker of what I'd been working on concurrent to my work with Deep Dickollective, running Sugartruck Recordings and the PeaceOUT Homohop Festival from 2001-2007.

I would have liked to do something like this sooner, the birth of my daughter, and family life as well as Deep Dic's success and the popularity of PeaceOUT led to a variety of touring, lecture and solo performance opportunites that took precendence (re: paid me and helped support my family) over putting out more music at that point..I thionk it works as a standalone project, but I'[m also hoping that it's existence will drive additional opportunities to create for other projects with artists I've known and am yet to meet.

That said, hope you dig. Please hit me at juba (at) jubakalamka (dot) com with questions and comments, should you be so inspired.

Thanks in advance,

Juba Kalamka
